Artist Statement
As a child I spent countless hours alone meandering on our vast farm. I sat on the cool dirt floor of the stables to escape the hot sun and envelop myself into the comforts of the old stone barn. I ran through soft, grassy pastures, smelling of clover and hay. I built small structures out of smooth rocks and lush green moss along the river. I discovered touching the tender, soft, pink skin between the horses nostrils and to this day, I am delighted to listen to a horse chew.
When intimate with nature where we all are meant to be, all five senses are tapped and one experiences a profound connection to their unique self. This powerful state may be where a child dreams. Their naive yet sound belief may give them the will to fly, swim across the ocean, or become invisible.
As we age, our minds shift from that clear, engaged innocence of youth. We live out of touch with nature and necessarily, layer ourselves with complex feelings and circumstance.
This connection is not lost now, but richly textured, and with devotion can be rediscovered.
Creating is healing to the soul. To open oneself and become immersed in the process is more important than the end result. I am endlessly curious about grasping the essence of a subject and leaving the viewer with questioning their innate mystery.
